A list of exercises created by Cary Elcome, the great teacher at TALK who now lives in England...
Several binders with photos, articles, class worksheets that are ready for the teacher to give to one of the students.  Brochures from local hotels and organizations can be placed in piles for the students to discover and peruse.  Labels on the binders read "READ THIS BINDER."    The student becomes the teacher's assistant.  "Give one sheet to each pair of students.  Ask the students to complete the sheet."

Theories about learning a language

1. You usually learn faster when you want to learn.

2. You can learn the opposite.

3. Tell us your dream we can find the words that will help you find your dream.

4. It takes about 7 or 8 exposures.  Carry a list of words with you and review many times.

5. Total Physical response:  use your body to remember a word.  Move your arm when you say bend, straighten.

6.  Use your audio memory (auditory).  Hear snap, crack, crackle, pop. Use music. Sing.

7. Repeat with an audio cassette in your car.  You have an inner child and the child does not want to study, but the child likes to play and repeat.

8. Visual memory:  use a photo.  Put a photo on your mirror.  Draw a picture in your vocabulary list.

9. Use your brain to imagine or visualize a situation.  (Very good with two-word verbs)
Pull on the door (but it does not open).  (I was pulling and pulling on the door)
Pull the door (and it opens)   Pull out _________________
Pull over _______________ , pull under ____________,  pull in  _______________,
Pull up _________________, pull down ________________,  pull off ______________
Then look for the idiom (the expression, the strange or special meaning)

10. Your brain likes to find patterns.  Create rules when you look at many words that have similarities (similar parts).

Sharpen

Straighten

Redden

Whiten
Blacken

Flatten

Lighten

Darken
Now think of other words with this pattern (and some will be standard English)

11.  Spelling:  what are the rules of spelling?  Find similar words and write your own rules.
The rabbit will hop, it hopped, it is hopping.
I hope it will rain. I hoped it will rain, Im hoping
Make it flat:   flaten it      flatten it
