Instruction page for Using Geocities.com to make your web page
Step by step
1.  -Type
www.geocities.com in the web page browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape)

2.  Click on
"Build Your Web Site!"

3.  Create your YAHOO ID.

For example:  countries2001
Password :  xxxxxxx
Security question (city of birth)
Answer:  Fort Lauderdale
Birthday
Alternate email address
Residence (Country)
Postal code, gender (M F)
Occupation
Industry
Do you want to receive special offers?
What are your interests?  (travel)
CLICK on
SUBMIT.
NOTE:  If you have a YAHOO ID, enter the information that is requested until you reach  number 5 (below).


4.  Choose a topic that best describes your page.
(What do you want to see on your homepage?) Click on
TRAVEL,  then on SUBMIT

You will see a page that summarizes your Yahoo ID, your alternate email and your Universal Reference Listing (URL).

5.  Click on
"Build your page now"

6.  Click on
Yahoo Page Builder (it is below Page Wizard)

7.  Click on
Launch Page Builder (the yellow box).

8. A box announces that  "Yahoo Page Builder is loading..."  so you wait about 1 or 2 minutes.  When the house stops moving, a new box opens.  Then a large box opens that says
"Yahoo PageBuilder V2.51b9/2.0" at the top of the screen. 
The logo is in three parts:  First the left wall drops down, then the right wall, then the left wall wiggles, then an exclamation mark hits the right wall.  Then the house drops from heaven and a door, two windows and a chimney appears.  Finally smoke comes from the chimney.

Now you are ready to build your page.

9.  There are icons for New, Open, Save, Preview, Modify, Duplicate, Delete, Text, Pictures, Link, Add-ons and Help.  click on
TEXT (between Delete and Pictures)..

10.  A box with a blue outline appears.  Click again in the box and start to type.

11.  Point to the blue outline of the box and hold.  There is a small vertical cross with arrows on the ends.  Click and hold, then drag the box to the position you want. 

You can change the shape of the box by clicking and holding on one of the corners of the box. 

If you click on a side of the box with a small square, you can stretch the box in one direction.

12.  You can insert at photo when you
click on PICTURES at the top row.  You can upload your own photos (ask Steve how to scan photos and "optimize them" in a program called Adobe Photoshop). Make the photos as small as possible to help the page to appear more quickly. You can use the photos on the system (click on View Thumbnails to see 50 photos at once).

The sub-menu for
Pictures has a list of photos at the top and an UPLOAD button in the middle.  If you have a photo on a diskette, put the diskette in drive A: and hit UPLOAD.  Another sub-menu appears and you click on BROWSE.  Locate the A: and then the file you want and click UPLOAD.  After about a minute, you will see your photo on the first sub-menu. 

13.  Click
OK on the bottom of the box.  Your photo is ready to be placed..

14.  Click on
SAVE (under the FILE menu at the top of the page).  It will ask if you want to make this your DEFAULT page.  Click on YES if this is your first page..    Now you can exit.  Your page's address is:
www.geocities.com/
[ID]/index.html
[ID] = your YAHOO ID
For example, this page is
www.geocities.com/countries2001/instruction.html
Advanced Techniques
FONTS:  Look at the last line of the page.  You see the font size (12),
justification boxes (left, center, right, up center down),
effects on the fonts (bold, italic, underline),
T = color of the letters
Bucket = color of the box's interior
clipboard

You can change the color of the box's interior by clicking on the paint bucket (betwen the T and the clipboard .

CLIPBOARD -- When you want to paste something from another program into a box, follow these steps.
a)  go to the other file and select the section you want to copy.
b)  Hit CONTROL-C
c)  return to the PAGEBUILDER page.  Click in a box where you want the information to be pasted.
d)  click on the clipboard
e)  hit CONTROL-V
f) the text will appear.  Hit PASTE button.
g) the text will appear in the box on the page.
