Previous Updates
5/25/02 - (8:00pm) Corey has been doing well the last couple of days. He has been doing good with his oxygen levels. He has been ranging from 50% - 60%. He seem to be a lot more comfortable. They have finally taken him out of isolation. He is still in the same room, but we don't have all the hand washing and gowns to wear now. They do not have any IV's in him now, so they are giving him all his medication through his feeding tube. This is nice because we can touch him without gloves on. They also weighed him yesterday and he is now 2lbs 15.7oz! (.3oz away from 3lbs!!!)
5/27/02 - (10:00pm) Corey has been doing okay the last couple of days. His oxygen requirements have creeped up to the upper 50%-lower 60%. They have also had to increase his ventilator settings. The doctor discussed the possibility of another short course of steroids to help his lungs. He said that the decision is ours and we need to weigh the risks of steroids against the risks of Corey being on the ventilator for a long time. We are currently praying about that decision. They had to put the IV back in him because they discovered that he is growing a gram negative bacteria and needs an antibiotic to treat it. His feedings have been switched to 27cc every three hours instead of 9cc per hour. This is to prepare him for eventual oral feedings on a three hour schedule.
5/28/02 - (10:00pm) Corey has been doing better today. His oxygen was at 51% and his ventilator frequency was weaned down a little bit. His feedings were increased to 29cc every three hours and he has been tolerating it well. He was weighed this morning and he was 3lbs 3oz! He finally made it over the 3lb mark! He has also been stooling very well on his own.
5/29/02 - (10:00pm) Corey has been doing okay today. His oxygen requirements have been a little higher. They also found that his blood sugar was high (probably due to fighting this infection) so they gave him some insulin. Everything else has pretty much been the same today.
5/30/02 - (10:00pm) Corey has been doing better today. His oxygen requirements have been the same, but they have been able to wean the ventilator settings a little bit. His blood sugar was fine today. He was weighed again this morning and he was 3lbs. 5.2oz. The doctor said that he will hold off on the steroids unless Corey's oxygen requirements consistently creep up above the 60's. The eye doctor came in to check for ROP today. He said that the eyes are immature, but he does not see any major problems at this point. He will be coming in every two weeks to recheck Corey's eyes. Amy got to hold Corey for the fourth time today. He seemed to enjoy it again today. While Amy was changing his diaper, he shot poop on her. She and the nurses got a good laugh from that.
6/1/02 - (11:00pm) Corey has been doing well today. His oxygen level at one point was down to 36%. Mom and Dad were able to hold him today and he did very well with the holdings. They are now feeding Corey 30cc every three hours and he is doing well with that amount. He was weighed again and he is now 3lbs 8.9oz! He keeps getting bigger and bigger. He even sucked his own thumb tonight. I will be posting a picture of that soon.
6/3/02 - (10:00pm) Corey has been doing okay yesterday and today. His oxygen requirements have remained in the mid 40's, but he has been dropping his sats more. This generally occurs while he is moving or upset. We have been trying to help calm him so that he can rest and have better oxygen saturation in his blood. He has still been able to digest his feedings.
6/4/02 - (10:00pm) Corey has been doing better today. His oxygen needs have been in the 40's and his desaturations have not been as often or severe. His feedings have been increased to 32 cc every three hours. They weaned some of his ventilator settings and are now giving him X-Rays every other day. These are all signs that he is getting better. He was weighed this morning and was 3lbs 9.6oz.
6/5/02 - (1:00pm) Corey is doing about the same today with his vent and desats. They drew a culture on Monday to test if Corey's antibiotics had taken care of the gram negative bacteria that he was growing. Instead of finding that bacteria, they found that he has MRSA again (see update on 5/7/02). Once again, they are not sure if he is merely colonizing it or if he is infected with it. They think that the Vancomycin may have partially knocked it out the first time, but that there were some bacteria left. This would mean that it took time for the bacteria to build back up. We will find out later this afternoon what is decided as far as treatment and isolation this time around. This was a big surprise because he is not presenting any clinical symptoms that would indicate infection other than increased secretions. We are praying that he is merely colonizing it at this point.
6/6/02 - (1:00pm) Corey is doing better today. His oxygen requirements have been in the 30's today and he has been tolerating it well. The doctor said that Corey is merely colonizing the MRSA, so he put him on a nasal antibiotic ointment. That will probably be continued for 5-7 days. Corey is in isolation due to the MRSA. This time he will remain in isolation for at least a month to make sure that the MRSA is gone. Corey was weighed this morning and he was 3lbs. 11.7oz.
6/8/02 - (1:00pm) Corey has been doing okay the last two days. His oxygen requirements have been in the mid 40's to 50's. Since Corey's birth, he has been on a warmer bed because he could not maintain his own temperature. The last couple of days, they have been able to turn the bed off and wrapped him in blankets. He seems to be maintaining his temperature well at this point. They had to increase some of the ventilator settings today because he was not tolerating the weaning. Corey was weighed this morning and he was 3lbs. 13.3oz.
6/10/02 - (9:30pm) Corey is doing well tonight. They did have to increase some of his vent settings a little this morning. They think he may have another infection, so they are running some tests. We will probobly know some of the preliminary results tomorrow. They also weighed him again and he weighed 4lbs!!!!!
