Previous Updates
5/2/02 - (8:00pm) Corey is doing well today.  They have increased his feeding to 6cc every 4 hours and he is already doing well with the new amount.  They also put him on his stomach today and he seems to like it.  Everything else is about the same and he has been pretty stable.
4/23-5/1
5/3/02 - (9:00pm) Corey is doing ok tonight.  He had a little bit of a rough day today.  His lungs were a little cloudy this morning when they took his x-ray.  They had to move his setting up a little on the ventilator, but he seems to be stable this evening.  They also changed his feedings.  They are now giving him a constant feed of 2cc per hour.  He seems to be doing well with this new schedule.

5/4/02 - (8:00pm) Corey is doing ok tonight.  He has had some trouble maintaining his oxygen saturation, so they have had to increase his oxygen to around 60%.  His x-ray this morning continued to look cloudy and they are giving him a diuretic to help get the fluid out of his lungs.  They increased his constant feeding to 2.5cc per hour and he has continued to tolerate it well.
5/5/02 - (9:00pm) Corey has been more stable today.  They gave him a bigger tube for his ventilator and that seems to be helping him oxygenate his blood.  They were able to bring his oxygen to 45% this evening.  They will be doing a heart ultrasound tomorrow to investigate the possibility that his PDA may have reopened or may be partially opened.  This would explain Corey's recent problems maintaining the oxygen level in his blood.  He continues to tolerate his feedings well at the current rate.
5/6/02 - (1:00pm) Today Amy got to hold Corey for the first time!  The doctor said that it would help Corey to be held, even though he is on the ventilator.  Jason left work to come see and to take some pictures.  We were both very excited that we finally got to hold him.  Corey did very well with all of the moving around that was done.  They weighed him this morning and he was up to 2 lbs 6oz.  They were able to wean him down on his ventilator settings while maintaining his oxygen level in the 40s.  Because he was doing better through the night, the doctor decided not to do the heart ultrasound.  They think that the bigger tube that they gave him is responsible for the improvements that he is making.  His x-ray still looked cloudy in the upper right lung.  His feedings were increased to a constant feed of 3cc per hour and he has tolerated it well so far.
5/7/02 - (2:00pm) Corey has been doing okay today.  The doctor said that his x-ray looked better this morning and he has been able to maintain the weaned ventilator settings.  His feedings have also been going well so they have increased the amount to 3.5cc per hour and he seems to be tolerating the change well.  On Sunday, the nurse had noted that there was some build-up in the ventilator tube which goes into his lungs.  At that time a culture was sent in to make sure that it was not an infection.  They got the results of the culture this morning.  It was found that Corey has MRSA which is a strain of bacteria which is resistant to conventional antibiotics.  It is treatable with an antibiotic called Vancomycin.  They have started treating him with the antibiotic and have isolated him away from the other babies in the NICU.  The antibiotic will be administered for the next week.  The infection has not caused any problems in his vital signs or oxygen levels so far.

5/8/02 - (10:00pm) Corey has been doing about the same today.  His x-ray continued to look good and his oxygen was at about the same level.  His feedings have been increased to 4cc per hour and he is tolerating that very well.  They have been continuing to send cultures to see if the Vancomycin is working to combat Corey's MRSA.  We have also been tested for MRSA and all of the nursing staff in the NICU have as well.  We should know the results tomorrow.
5/9/02 - (2:00pm) Corey's oxygen and ventilator settings have been the same today.  His feedings have been increased to 4.5cc per hour and he has been taken off the TPN (supplemental nutrition).  This means that he is only receiving fortified breastmilk for nutrition now.  The nasal swab and test of his ventilator tube came back positive again for the MRSA.  They will test him again once he has finished his course of Vancomycin.  Corey received blood today.  He was also given a sedative to help him sleep in hopes that it will help his lungs.  The doctor is still considering the possibility of doing a heart ultrasound because Corey continues to struggle with his blood oxygen level.
5/10/02 - (3:30pm) Corey has been doing okay today.  He was struggling with keep his blood oxygen levels up so they placed him on his side and that seems to have been helping.  They have been weaning his ventilator some.  The doctor said that they may try to put him on the conventional ventilator next week because Corey has been breathing a lot on top of the ventilation (which is not good with the one that he is currently on).  They increased his feedings to 5cc per hour.  The doctor said that he will try to increase his feedings by 0.5cc a day until he reaches 7cc.  Corey was weighed yesterday and he was 2lbs 4oz.
5/11/02 - (5:00pm) Corey has been having a rough day.  His oxygen levels were up at a 100% when we left today.  He is still dropping his blood oxygen levels down at this high level.  Some of this can be caused by different things and one of them is the amount of mucus he is producing.  This increase in mucus can be caused by the MRSA that he has.  They also did another heart ultrasound to see if his PDA had opened up. (The PDA could also cause his leves to drop.)  The ultrasound showed that his PDA did not open up and it did not look like he was having problems with his heart.  Right now the doctors don't know what is causing his blood oxygen to drop.  They are talking about changing the ventilator to see if that would help.  Corey is still digesting all his food and they keep increasing the amount he is getting.  He is growing and looking bigger.  Right now he just needs to take care of his lungs.  We did find out that both of us are negative for the MRSA.
