Corey's Updates
(Sorry if there is some confusion with what is said in some of the updates. Some of the terms and more background information will be explained in a different section at a later time.)
4/23/02 - (9:00pm) Corey has been a little touchy today. His stats tend to drop when the nurses try to do anything with him. One thing that he is dealing with right now is his lungs. His X-rays this morning showed some build up in his lungs. They treat this by tapping on his chest and making the build up break loose. When it breaks loose, they can suck it out of him. They have been able to get some out. They did another X-ray later in the day and it looked like things were clearing up. This build up in his lungs could be causing some of his reactions when the nurses do things with him. When we left the hospital he was doing a little better. He was resting a little more and his stats were a little better.

4/23/02 - (1:30pm) Corey continues to do pretty well. They have been able to continue Corey on his feedings They report that he was able to make a stinky diaper again on his own last night which means that his body is processing the food. This morning his chest X-Ray indicated that he had some secretions built up in his lungs. This is a result of being on the ventilator and is treated with vibrations on the chest to loosen the secretions. They have had to bump up his oxygen and ventilator settings because the secretions were making it harder for him to breathe. Hopefully this treatment will loosen enough of the secretions so that he can have his oxygen weaned back down.
4/24/02 - (8:30pm) Corey is doing a little better tonight. He does seem to be a little more stable. He still acts up when they do things with him. He still has a dense spot in one of his lungs. They have been running test to see if it pneumonia or something. All the test so far have not shown any infections. They are still treating him with antibiotics just in case it is an infection. The nurses say he will have low days like this, but he is still stable and will just need time. Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers. That is what he needs most.

4/25/02 - (1:30pm) Corey is doing better today. He was able to come down to 45% on his oxygen and to wean his ventilator settings. He was not able to tolerate his feedings through the night, but he did digest his food this morning. This means that he was fed again. X-Rays were taken this morning and they showed some fluid in his lungs again. They took more lab work to rule out infection. His blood sugar was high today so they gave him some insulin. The doctor said that it may be due to the stress that he had yesterday, but they will continue to monitor it. Corey was weighed this morning and he had lost a little less than an ounce. It was good that he was able to keep his weight fairly steady with the way that the last couple of days have gone. We are pleased that his lungs have been doing better and that things are improving.
4/26/02 - (9:30pm) Corey has been doing well today. He is about the same as his last update. The nurses said that his levels have been good and they are just going to let him be for a while.
4/27/02 - (12:30pm) Corey has been pretty stable. He still has a cloudy lung that they think could be an infection. They have also found that he has PIE(Pulmonary Interstitial Emphysema) in his other lung. This can be caused by some of the setting on the ventilator. They also said the cure for this is having him on the oscillating ventilator and changing his position. They have him on his side right now to help with that. They are still waiting to see if his lungs will just clear up. They will most likely take him of the antibiotics tomorrow, because it will have been a week since they started them.
4/28/02 - (12:30pm) Corey is doing better this morning. We went in last night and talked to the doctor some about Corey's x-rays. They took one last night of his chest and it showed the one lung with the possible infection and the other with the PIE. We went in this morning and looked at a new x-ray they took this morning. His one lung was still cloudy from the possible infection, but the other one was completely clear of the PIE!! The nurse put it right, she said it was a miracle. They said PIE will generally take a while to clear up, but not that fast. His stats are now doing better and his ventilator setting are better. Thank you for all your prayers! That's how miracles happen.
4/28/02 - (7:30pm) Corey is still doing good this evening. He has been more stable and has been able to come down on his ventilator setting. He was opening his eyes a lot tonight and sucking a lot on his hoses. It is nice to see him active.
4/29/02 - (8:00pm) Corey is doing well today. He has been more stable and is eating more. They have increased his feeding to 3cc every 4hours and he seems to be digesting them all. They also said his PIE is definatly cleared up and his other lung that has been cloudy is starting to clear up. He is looking better every day and is now pointing everywhere and ripping off the sensors they have on his body.
4/30/02 - (9:00pm) Corey is doing good today. They have increased his feedings to 4cc every 4 hours. His x-rays looked a little better today and show signs of clearing up. Most everything is the same on his settings. They did say he has hernias, but they are not concerned about them. Babies born early like this tend to have them and can be corrected later if needed. The only other news is that Corey is a very good shot. He decided to pee on the doctor, his papers and into his coffee when they were changing him.
| 5/1/02 - (8:00pm) Corey is still doing good today. They have now started him on 5cc every four hours for his feedings. He has done very well with his new amount. His x-rays show that his cloudy lung has cleared up!!! They have also lowered some of his ventilator setting. Corey looked good tonight. He was very calm and had his eyes opened most of the time.
