1986: Was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on 6/7 when Mark Gubicza was placed on the disabled list...made his Major-League debut on 6/8 vs. Minnesota...appeared in four games before returning to Omaha on 6/21...was recalled on 8/25 when Al Hargesheimer hurt his shoulder and remained with the Royals for the rest of the season.

1987: Was traded to the New York Mets in a five-player deal on 3/28 and went 5-6 with a 3.71 ERA in 21 games (13 starts)...recorded his first Major-League win and complete game in a 6-2 victory on 5/12 vs. Cincinnati (9.0 IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 3K)...was placed on the 21-day disabled list on 5/29 after breaking the little finger of his right hand while attempting to bunt on 5/27 at San Francisco...had three pins inserted into the finger by Dr. Richard Eaton...recorded his first career save on 10/3 at St. Louis, tossing three scoreless innings in a 7-1 victory.

1988: Became the fourth Met ever to win 20 games, going 20-3 with a 2.22 ERA in 35 games (28 starts)...finished third in the National-League Cy Young Award voting (Orel Hershiser won unanimously)...was second in the National League with a 2.22 ERA and 213 strikeouts...threw a career-high 10 innings on 6/2 vs. Chicago and 6/13 vs. St. Louis...threw a complete game, two-hit shutout on 6/19 vs. Philadelphia and a one-hitter on 8/29 vs. San Diego (fourth-inning double by Tony Gwynn)...threw a perfect inning of relief in the All-Star Game at Cincinnati, his first appearance...won his final eight starts of the season...went 1-1 vs. Los Angeles in the NLCS.

1989: Finished fourth in the National League with 190 strikeouts, tied for fourth with seven complete games and 10th with a .223 batting average against...had the third longest win streak in the league with eight from 6/21-8/18...led all pitchers in hits with 18 and was second with a .234 BA...was 3-5 on 6/5, but did not suffer a loss in his next 15 games and ended 14-8 with a 3.52 ERA in 34 games (33 starts).

1990: Went 14-10 with 3.23 ERA in 31 games (30 starts)...led the Majors with 233 strikeouts, one more than Nolan Ryan...led the National League with 9.9 K/9.0 IP and was sixth in opponents' BA (.226)...tossed three consecutive complete games from 8/18-8/28; struckout a season-high 13 batters on 8/18 at San Francisco and struckout 10 or more batters in four straight starts from 6/30-7/19...became the first Met pitcher to record a pinch hit when he singled off Dale Mohorcic on 8/1 at Montreal.

1991: Went 14-14 with a 3.29 ERA in 34 starts...tied for the Major-League lead in strikeouts with Roger Clemens at 241, the second straight year he led the National League...led the N.L. with 9.3 K/9.0 IP and was fifth with 232.2 IP...tied a National-League record with 19 strikeouts in a 7-0 win on 10/6 at Philadelphia (matched Tom Seaver and Steve Carlton)...tossed his second career one-hitter on 9/20 vs. St. Louis (Felix Jose doubled in the eighth).

1992: Went 17-10 with a 2.83 ERA with the Mets and Blue Jays...was traded to Toronto on 8/27 for INF Jeff Kent and a player to be named later (OF Ryan Thompson)...led all Major-League pitchers with a career-high 261 strikeouts...tied for first in the National League with five shutouts and first with 82 walks...led the league with 9.8 K/9.0 IP, was second in strikeouts, fifth in opponents' BA (.223) and tied for sixth in complete games (7)...matched a then career-high eight-game win streak from 6/16-8/2...ALCS vs. Oakland: won Game 2, 3-1; lost Game 5, 6-2...did not have a decision in two World Series starts vs. Atlanta, but Toronto won both games (Games 2 and 6).

1993: Went 11-14 with a 3.33 ERA in 34 starts with Kansas City...was among the American League's leaders in ERA (10th-3.33), starts (T6th-34), complete games (9th-6), IP (5th-254.0), strikeouts (4th-191), opponents' BA (3rd-.233), losses (T4th-14), wild pitches (T3rd-14), hit batsmen (T5th-10) and walks (2nd-114)...tossed a career-high 254.0 innings...the Royals scored 18 runs in his 14 losses, and his 3.0 runs/start was the lowest run support in the American League.

1994: Edged the Yankees' Jimmy Key for the American-League Cy Young Award, going 16-5 with a 2.94 ERA in 23 starts for the Royals...became the first pitcher to win despite not leading the league in any category or pitching on a first-place club...Cone tallied 108 points and 15 first-place votes, while Jimmy Key registered 96 points with 10 first-place votes...was among the league's top pitchers in the following catagories: ERA (3rd-2.94); wins (T2nd-16); IP (8th-171.2); strikeouts (6th-132); shutouts (T2nd-3); winning percentage (T5th-762); and opponents BA (2nd-.209)...LH batters hit .238...RH batters hit .173...the Royals were 17-6 in his 23 starts...was 8-3 with a 3.06 ERA at Kauffman Stadium and 8-2 with a 2.81 ERA on the road...recorded victories in eight consecutive starts after losing his first start; included was a club-record three straight shutouts (Minnesota 9-0, 5/11; Seattle 4-0, 5/17; California 4-0, 5/22); he allowed only eight hits in that 27-inning stretch...went the distance in his next start vs. the Yankees, where his scoreless-inning streak was snapped at 28, five shy of Kevin Appier's club record of 33 set in 1993...recorded a six-game win streak from 6/28-8/2...was named A.L. 1995: Went 18-8 with a 3.57 ERA in 30 starts for the Yankees and Blue Jays...was acquired from Toronto on 7/28 in exchange for right-handed pitchers Marty Janzen, Jason Jarvis and Mike Gordon...led the American League in innings pitched and was second in victories to Baltimore’s Mike Mussina (19)...earned the 4-2 victory in his Yankee debut on 7/29 at Minnesota (8.0 IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, 4BB, 9K, 1WP)...won his first four starts as a Yankee (2.25 ERA) before losing a 5-3 decision on 8/19 at California...was his longest winning streak of the season...his three losses to the Angels marked the first time he has lost three times to one team in the same season...tossed the 50th complete game of his career on 8/13 vs. Cleveland in a 4-1 Yankee victory...tossed his 40th career 10-plus strikeout game in an 8-4 victory on 9/8 vs. Boston (struck out 10)...overcame problems with blisters on his finger to go 4-1 with a 3.83 ERA in six September starts, as the Yankees battled for the American-League Wild Card...went 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his last three starts of the season, including a 6-3 victory on 9/27 at Milwaukee with three days rest...was his first start on three days rest since 8/25/91 with the Mets...went 1-0 with a 4.60 ERA in two starts vs. Seattle in the Division Series.

1996: Made a successful comeback from surgery to remove a small aneurysm in his right arm...went 7-2 with a 2.88 ERA in 11 starts...made his first Opening-Day start as a Yankee (third of his career) on 4/2 at Cleveland...held defending A.L. Champs to two hits over seven innings in a 7-1 Yankee win...after going 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA in his first four starts, he underwent an angiogram on 4/27 which determined a circulatory problem...tossed a complete-game win vs. Chicago on 5/2 to go 4-1 with a 2.03 ERA, but after prescribed medication did not acheive desired results, additional tests revealed a small aneurysm in the upper part of his right arm...was placed on 15-day disabled list on 5/8...successful surgery to remove the aneurysm was performed on 5/10 at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center (NY)...made two rehab starts at Double-A Norwich--on 8/21 and 8/26--before coming back in dramatic fashion on 9/2 at Oakland...in his first appearance since 5/2, he held the A's hitless for seven innings before giving way to Rivera after 85 pitches...the duo combined for a one-hit, 5-0 victory...was 3-1 with a 3.94 ERA in five starts after his return...his lone defeat, on 9/7 vs. Toronto, was his first as a Yankee at Yankee Stadium (was 8-0)...fell one victory short of becoming the first Yankee starter to win his first nine decisions at Yankee Stadium since Hank Borowy in 1942...made starts in Division Series (Game 1), ALCS (Game 2) and World Series (Game 3)...helped turn the World Series around, limiting Atlanta to one run on six hits in six innings as the Yankees won Game 3, 5-2.

1998: Enjoyed one of his finest Major-League seasons, going 20-7 with a 3.55 ERA in 31 starts...finished fourth in the American-League Cy Young Award voting (behind Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez and David Wells)...the Yankees were 24-7 in games he started...opponents hit .237 (fourth lowest in the A.L.)...LH batters hit .254...RH batters hit .218...was among the American-League leaders in wins (T1st), winning percentage (T4th), strikeouts (5th) and ERA (8th)...his 20 wins tied a career high, breaking the Major-League record for the longest stretch between 20-win seasons (was 20-3 in 1988 with the N.Y.
