Valets, Maids & Butlers

Jackson (b. 1864)

Faithful, reliable,
Completely unflappable,
Solid, dependable,
Utterly admirable.

Devotedly diligent,
Totally competent,
Discreetly efficient,
Supremely self-confident.

Whatever our troubles,
Nothing him hassles,
Though others may flee,
He calmly serves tea.

Stalwart through danger,
Stands firm under fire,
He won't flinch or give ground,
But bullets hand round.

Brave butler and valet,
Steadfastly he'll stay,
He will never forsake,
But always serve cake!

A gentleman's gentleman,
With teapot or shotgun,
Always depend upon
The excellent Jackson.

From the poem "Best of Men" by Lord Arthur Brocket, 19 August 1899, Skipton Castle

Alfred (b. 1868)

Lord Brockets loyal and trusted Valet, his ”gentlemans gentleman”, Alfred has been responsible for getting Artie out of more scrapes than anyone will ever know. The soul of tact and discretion he is remarkable for his quiet organization and efficiency in a somewhat erratic and flamboyant household.  He has shown great patience in teaching young Jimmy the ropes and, be it for a dinner of five at two minutes notice or a trip round the world at fifteen, Alfred will always ensure not a fork nor a tie goes astray.  If, let us say, another of the Company were to attempt to recruit Alfred from Lord Brockets employ, he would, no doubt, be heard to say "Alas no madam, Sir would go to pieces without me".  And he'd be right, as usual.

Miss. Emily Smith (b. 1878)

After my initial concerns over Emily's placement with such a young employer as Mrs. le roux, I am pleased to say she has risen easily to the High standards expected by "Marylebone ladies ladies". Although she has always been an exquisite cook and a  model of trained efficiency, she has a rather adventurous  nature which I had long thought might lead her into trouble. During her training She was always a respectable girl, not likely to find herself involved with soldiers or footmen, but with a desire for travel and excitement that might not have suited all employers. It appears that her keen interest in society and fashion are well placed in Mrs. Le Roux's staff and it is my feeling that a certain commonality of spirit may even exist between them.
