Viscount Rupert Buffington (b. 1871)New Members this year include Viscount Rupert Buffington, Eldest son to Lord Hothfield and resident at Skipton Castle in the West Riding of Yorkshire. “Buffy”, as he is known to his set, practices as a Barrister from the Fountain Court Chambers in the Temple Bar and the City of Leeds. He specializes, we have heard, in cases of a more challenging and unusual nature. His main interests are in mesmerism, hypnotism and their modern application. Viscount Buffington is a known patron of the arts and church and a popular figure among London's social fraternity. We welcome him to The Society for Psychical Research with keen interest and predict great things for his future. The Psychic Researcher 1898 |
Inspector Robert Mackenzie (b. 1858)Inspector Mackenzie does it again! After the horror and fear brought to the homes of widows and orphans, Inspector Mackenzie has single handedly brought the opium barons and their crime rings to their knees. Brought in when all of Scotland Yards efforts to discover the Lords of Dreams had failed he infiltrated these scurrilous dens of iniquity where slave labour and atrocities beyond belief were being perpetrated on London’s honest poor, and exposed them for the cads and bounders they are! A mysterious and aloof worker, little is known about the peoples hero, but the ladies of Limehouse send him their heartfelt thanks. The Daily Star 1892 |

Reverend Jonathan Michaels (b.1866)We rejoice in the news that our brother in the lord Father Jonathan has returned safely from his Calling in the Congo mission and is once more encased in the bosom of the church. Many will remember his angelic voice which from a very early age was the pride of the cathedral school in York and more will have followed his career with interest as he went to spread The Word amongst the heathen in Africa. Tragically many of his fellow missionaries died in the terrible malaria outbreak of 1895, but we praise God that he was spared to continue with the Lords work in the Diocese of Bradford, Yorkshire. His expertise on matters of the unexplained and logical foresight have been of much assistance in Parishes across the country, as has his selfless work amongst the poor.Skipton Parish Gazette 1898 |
Dr. Archibald Staunton (b. 1864)The subject of esteemed Industrialist and Steam Engineer Dr Staunton’s lecture was the great advantages of the railway transportation system over the canals and road. His expert advice has already assisted many company's in remaining competitive, indeed, the most luxurious and efficient railway system the Orient Express owes it’s existence to Dr Staunton's revolutionary piston system. He then continued to explain how the leaps and bounds in technical advances were altering our way of life forever, a magic lantern showed pictures of strange metal men occupied in menial tasks while their masters cavorted in flying machines taking day trips to the moon, a glimpse, as it were, of the Bold Future of her Majesties Empire. The Times 1898 |

What a joy it was, In this age of cynicism and technical explanations, to witness the gasps of wonder which greeted Mr. Devants new show at the Egypt rooms. His show has always been spectacular, but it was lended an extra dimension of drama and romance by his beautiful new assistant. Only one with a heart of stone could not have shuddered as he plunged swords through her winsome levitating body. She emerged unscathed only to be turned into a human torch later in the show, then mysteriously dissolve into a flock of doves. This show is a delight from start to finish. It is well known that Devant has crusaded against frauds who would deceive the bereaved by taking vast sums of money for so called séances, but if anyone can truly create magic then it surely must be this maestro of mystery...
