Animal Kingdom Foundation, Inc. (AKF) is a non-stock,
non-profit organization that has fought for the promotion and
protection of animal rights in the Philippines since 2002. It is the
local counterpart of the International Wildlife Coalition Trust (IWCT)
situated in the United Kingdom. It is part of the Securities and
Exchange Commission and is enlisted with the Department of
Agriculture's Bureau of Animal Industry.
Founder and president, Mr.
Charles Leslie Wartenberg,
pilots the organization with the help of Dr. Pnsiano Aberin, MD
(Vice-President), Alan Whittaker & Luis Buenaflow, Jr. (Board of
Trustees), Atty. Heidi Caguioa (Treasurer) and Greg Quimp (Corporate
Secretary). Together withan external affairs officer, 2 full-time
researchers/investigators, a resident veterenarian and his assistant, a
center manater, and other personnel, AKF fights the illegal consumption
of dog meat, pushes for legislations and ammendments to protect animal
welfare, and rehabilitates rescued dogs in hopes to find the proper
home for them one day.
AKF works closely with the Central Intelligence and
Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) when
raiding dog-meat trading businesses. Investigations (mostly taking
place in the northern part of the country) are carefully carried out
for weeks to confirm suspected involvements in the illicit business.
Rescued dogs are then taken in and, since 2006, rehabilitated in the
Animal Rehabilitation and Rescue Center of OKF in barangay Cub-Cub,
Capas, Tarlac, and later, put up for adoption. Over 400 dogs are
currently in the rescue center waiting for loving owners and homes.
