Search Engines

Search engines are a wonderful way of finding information on the Internet. In fact, without them, we wouldn't be able to find half of what we wanted. But with them, most of the time, we still can't find half of what we are looking for anyway. Why? Well it's because we don't know how to search properly. If you want to get better results from search engines, then this essential guide may by just what you've been searching for. Pardon the pun.

There are dozens of search engines, and it's quite possibly that you have your favourite. But not all search engines are the same, because some have more features than others. If you search for the same thing on lots of different search engines, then it's highly unlikely that you will get the same results. It's up to you which search engine you use. You might prefer to use the one that appears on the home page of your ISP, or perhaps there is another one like Yahoo or Lycos that you use. Which ever it is, the chances are you aren't getting the full benefit of it.

When you use a search engine it really doesn't matter whether you use upper or lower case letters. YoU CoUlD tYpE iN WoRdS like this and the search engine wouldn't care, but it's probably better to stick to lower case. The first thing that you should do when you are searching for a specific phrase is use "quotation marks". By using quotation marks you should find that you aren't getting tens of thousand of search results, but instead your search is narrowed down somewhat. So, for example, if you are searching for technology on, for example, Yahoo, you would get around 647000 results (or more). However if you search for "the technology channel" then you will get around 1000 results.

Metasearch engine's

There are hundreds of search engines on the web, while the majority will be good they often come up with different results. To enable a more thorough result you could use a metasearch engine. These fire off search requests to other search engines and collate the results that come back. With luck you should have an extremely thorough result in just a few seconds.  Here are some of the best :

Go2net
Search.com
 Dogpile
 Inference Find
 IXQuick

 The Big Hub
