Shopping on the web should be safe, convenient and
enjoyable bargain hunting but you should know how to
get yourself out of a situation should it arise and
prevent falling into the many pitfalls. I can't go through
every eventuality here but I hope it helps you and eases
any worries you may have of online shopping.
Check the site has a secure way of paying, it will
have a closed padlock in the bottom of the browser window.
Pay by credit card, if anything does go wrong you can
clain against your card issuer if the purchase is between
£100 and to £30,000, this is your legal right. Check
with your issuer to see if you are covered for less
than £100.If you buy overseas you may have to pay duty
! A visit to the custom and excise site may help (
www.hmce.gov.uk
).
Another good site is the office of fair trading (
www.oft.gov.uk
),
you'll find details of your rights there. If you do
fall foul of the fraudsters report it immediately so
their scam can be shut down.
Sites that are members of the Which? Web Trader Scheme
or the TrustUK Scheme (which is government endorsed)
will ensure your payments are secure and delivery dates
adhered to. (
