so the food safety people had a conference in DC and caroline cleverly volunteered to go learn....and visit us!  so she did her learning thing, had dinner with her husband, joe, 's aunt, and took the metro out to our neck of the woods!  what a pal!

(while she did that i did the 15th annual chili cookoff.  a successful event, indeed, tho more tiring than i expected it to be.  but i digress.)

so saturday we hung out around the house with ryan's mom, watching the boys carry drywall into the basement, talking, and generally catching up.  we even ran some regular herndon type errands.  i was pretty much exhausted still from the crazy preceding week, and caroline was patient with my mood!

so sunday we did what we could to make up for lost time and took the train back to the city to see the Hokusai wood block exhibition at the sackler museum at the smithsonian.  we said "wow".....  quietly, so as not to disturb the other people beside themselves in amazement that so much beautiful detail comes from a woodcut.  and then didn't blame Hokusai when he got into painting later on in his career.  probably at that point it saved time and allowed more freedom.  everything was amazing.  so of course we went to the gift shop before embarking on the ride back.

we did figure out (we are talented and gifted you know) that the saint patrick's day parade was taking place, and THAT was why there were guys in kilts, several bands, a pagent queen, and bagpipe noise as we'd arrived downtown ealier.  huh!  caroline turned out to be dressed for the occasion... i was not.

we rushed home as fast as the train would take us, got the bags, and took her to the airport with the utmost efficiency.  evelyn had already KNOWN we were hungry and made a lunch snack for caroline to take with her on the plane.  i had one, too.  delicious.

phew!  as always, not enough time!!!
