| During the war, Japan's occupation armies had destroyed China's major cities. This country suffered disaster second only to those of the Soviet Union. When the Japanese invaded China in 1937, a bitter civil war was raging between the Nationalists and the Communists. During the Second World War, they turned out to be united to fight the Japanese. With the war's end, however, they resumed their fight for control of the country. |
