Internal Struggles
Mao Zedong was the leader of the Communists. Under his leadership, Communists held a stronghold in northwestern China. They mobilized Chinese peasants for guerilla war against Japanese in the northeast. Thanks to their efforts to teach literacy and improve food production, the Communists won the peasents' loyalty. Mao's Red Army controlled much of northern China by 1945.
Meanwhile, the Nationalists were also trying to be dominated in China. Under the leadership of Jiang Jieshi, who had the former name spelled Chiang Kai-shek, Nationalists dominated in southwestern China. The U.S. had sent the Nationalists at least 1.5 billion in aid to fight Japanese during the war. However, the Nationalists just actually fought few battles against Japanese. Instead, they served its strength for the coming battle against Mao's Red Army, who were Communists. After the Japanese surrendered, the Communists & the Nationalists instantly resumed their civil war.
