We bought
this 1969 CJR code Mach I in November of 1998.
It looked good on the outside, the only external alterations
we’ve made have been hood pins and the Mach I striping.
The interior and accessories needed more help.
There was about 70K miles on it this numbers matching car at the
time. It was built in San
Jose and had spent its whole life in California.
We were lucky to find such an extremely original car.
It has all CA smog equipment, build-sheet and registration
records with a California black-plate. Specs:
Engine:
Original, stock 428 cubic inch big block.
The only modifications were bronze seals/guides, Petronix
ignition and a rather nasty camshaft the previous owner installed when
it was being updated. For
drivability purposes we put on a Holley 750 progressive linkage
carburetor. And you gotta
love that shaker hood. Rear end:
9”, with 3.50 posi, 31 spline axles. Body:
Gulfstream Aqua: came delete spoilers and window slats.
Transmission:
Close ratio 4 speed top loader. Exhaust:
It has the original exhaust system it came off the factory floor with.
Transverse muffler, chrome quad tips and all. That is how rot free this car is. Interior: Black Deluxe interior, fold down rear seat. We have put in a new headliner and carpet as well as a set of Shelby style console gauges.
Additional
Information:
The 428 CJ engines had a big
Holley four-barrel, 390 GT cam and 427 low-riser heads. Version no. 1
came with a nonfunctional hood scoop. A Ram-Air package ($133 extra) was
part of version no. 2. Then there was the 428 Super Cobra Jet engine. It
combined the functional "shaker" scoop with beefy rear axles
and "LeMans" type connecting rods. Total production of 1969 Mach 1s was 72,458 units. Over 13,000 of them are believed to have been 428 CJ/SCJ powered. About 9.4 percent are believed to still be around. Horsepower rating from the factory was a skimpy 335, that was suspected to be underrated by as much as 65 HP. The factory torque spec was 440 ft/lbs.
