Symbolism:

One of the main theme in Tale of Two Cities was 'to be burried alive'. Like being removed from society for many years and have to reintroduce themselves to the rules, ethics, morals, etc of society.  Doctor Mannette was in prison for many years in Bastille.
The red wine that was spilt outside the DeFarge's shop may was another example of symbolism.  It foreshadowed the up-comming blood that would be 'spilt'.
The theme of a prison is esspecially significant in this novel.  The Tellson's bank was considered a 'prison' with its dark, gloomy atmosphere and barred windows.  Large prisons like La Force and Bastille are also important.  Doctor Mannette was in Bastille for many years and Darnay was sent to La Force.  During the revolution, both of these were attacked to kill many of the prisoners and free others.
