Brief History

Tale of Two Cities begins in the 1770's, just prior to the famous French Revolutions.
Aristrocrats have treated the lower class people harshly for centuries and the 'commoners' usually always accepted this behaviour.  The French began to respond differently to their poor treatment.
In April of 1789, King Louis XVI went to Versais to ease the pressure but he sided the aristrocrats which sparked anger.  From 1789 to the late 1790's, these commoners took up arms and attacked the aristrocrats.
The public's anger towards the aristrocrats led to hundreds of deaths.  Anyone associated with the aristrocrats in anyway would be brought to trial and more-often that not, killed. (Either by hanging or guillotine)
On November 5, 1799, Napolean gained absolute power over France.  He ended the revolutions and created a large army.  He invaded several countries around Europe (Germany, Prussia, Spain, and North Africa) but was pushed back by the Russians and eventually defeated by the Germans, Prussians and English in Waterloo in 1815.
After this point, the French had no problem with revolutions and King Louis XVII came to power and ruled comparitivly peacefully.
