Character Analysis

Although Charles Darnay appears to be the main character in the novel, Sydney Carton has a more destinct role.
Carton is introduced in the novel as a drunk attourney defending Charles Darnay.
Carton is not satisfied with himself or others.  Although he claims to care for nothing or nobody, he has strong feelings for Lucie Manette.  Unfortunatly for Carton, when he tells her this, she had already fallen in love with Darnay.
Carton began to feel better about himself and others until his rejection, he then quickly returned to his 'sour' moods.  He believed he was worthless to anyone.
He eventually sacrifised his life to save Darnay's so Lucie would be happy for ever.  He felt that this would be the only way he could add meaning to his 'useless' life.
His actions could be compared to those of Christ's.  His death was for the happiness of others (Lucie).
