building our cob studio walls
Now come the fun part... playing with mud!  We set up a cob pit to mix up larger batches of cob.  It worked real well except when the weather gets cold.  We first started the cob walls on Sept 29 and now late in October we have had a couple of cold nights.  Its important to protect the cob from freezing as the the frozen water will expand and crack the walls.  To protect the cob from freezing we used a dryer mix and stopped cobbing earlier in the day to ensure sufficient drying.  We also insulated any wet cob with straw and tarps.  At this time, (Oct 30 2003) our walls are 90% complete.  So far we have used about 8 bales of straw, 8 yards of dirt/sand and roughly 800 gallons of water to make our cob mix.
Cob studio walls almost complete.
