WATER CONSERVATION
We can all do our bit for Australia
The results speak for themselves.
See assignment findings below.
       Assignment findings

**There are approximately 68,000 residences in Wollongong, NSW

**The cost of 8,000 litre plastic water tanks on 68,000 homes = about $75 million

**The average water used in the home is 800 litres per day = 292,000 litres per year

**292,000 x 68,000 residences = 19,856,000,000

**Divide the usage per year per house by an 8,000 litre tank = 2,482,000

**Avergae rainfall = 730mm per year (30 inches per year)

**Average roof area of house 300 square metres = 7500mm per every inch of rain

**7,500 x 30 =225,000 litre

**
225,000 litre  is 64% of residential annual water usage

The highlight is my emphasis
Water tanks are just one way the people can help save water. "Because water is relatively cheap in Australia, not many people think about the savings which could be made with a tank" Illawarra Mercury 2002 (before the subsidy was announced)
Most of the water that falls along the coast of Australia runs straight down our stormwater drains and out to the sea.
If we were to do our bit for the environment we would all benefit in more than one way.

Our reliance on water boards would be significantly reduced thus water can be directed to more urgent use such as farms etc in times of drought, our excess water bill would be slashed if not eliminated completely especially in the domestic market, The need for further dams would be considerably delayed thus reducing costs to government (and our taxes) also the environmental impact of yet another dam would be pushed back years if not decades.
Brief headline statements from Newspapers 2002
Water tanks essential - Brown LABOR'S Ward 3 candidate David Brown wants Wollongong City Council to make rainwater tanks mandatory for all new houses.
Illawarra Mercury 19/11/2002

Urban tanks more than just a pipedream. TIMING is everything in politics.
Newcastle Herald 13/11/2002

Subsidy sparks flood of tanks ACROSS Sydney, people are getting tanked. With the drought bringing the big smoke a taste of what the bush is going through, increasing numbers of city dwellers are installing rainwater tanks a trend boosted by a Sydney Water subsidy of up to $500 on the cost of a tank.
Sun Herald 17/11/2002

The drought in our backyards. If there is any good to come out of the drought which is searing Sydney, it is the growing community acceptance that responsibility for saving water extends into individual homes. The announcement that the State Government will subsidise the installation of rainwater tanks, to reduce the drain on Sydney's catchment dams, is welcome, if long overdue. Sydney Water estimates that household water use, and water bills, could be reduced by 30 to 50 per cent if all homes installed tanks for use on gardens, in toil
