The Holyoke Journal ...
... is a record of trips to our cabin. When we first looked at the property it seemed like no one had been there for a long time, it was rare to see any sign of civilization; in the past few years the area has been getting more popular for recreational uses of all kinds. We were told by the former owner that the site was logged-off about a hundred years ago, but there are still a few remaining red pines that predate that era. They are noticeable because they are some of the tallest trees on the place.
We built a small rustic cabin (see the ghost cabin story for more on that) and have made other modest improvements. The cabin is located on the former site of a sandpit, so we didnt have to clear many trees for the construction.
We occasionally see signs of animals, although actual sitings are rare. Claude did wake up a bear one spring, and we also see a few deer. Coyotes can be heard on summer nights, along with owls. It is also home to small animals, like chipmunks and squirrels.
This journal is an attempt to record of some of our observations and experiences there. We hope to add sections on the different areas mentioned above and more information about individual plants and animals.
