CLUB NIGHT RACE PROCEDURES AND RULES

Marshalling
Swimmers are to proceed to the marshalling area when their race has been called. Swimmers will be seated on the grassed area in rows of each heat. At the Marshall’s instruction, each heat of swimmers will move behind the starting blocks. They must stand behind the correct lane and wait for further instructions from the Starter. If a swimmer has nominated for an event and is not present at the marshalling area, their name will be called three (3) times. If the swimmer does not appear then he/she will be automatically withdrawn from the race.

Starting
When the Referee blows the whistle, step onto the rear step of the starting block. There must be absolute silence and no movement near the starting blocks. This applies to everyone including the spectators.

The Starter will then call the race distance and stroke followed by “take your marks”. All swimmers will then move to the front of the block and take up their starting position. Once all swimmers are still, the starting gun will sound to start the race.

False Starts
The one start rule shall apply throughout Club Nights.

A swimmer who dives into the pool before assuming and holding his starting position prior to the signal to start is liable to disqualification on the recommendation of the Starter and concurrence of the Referee.

A swimmer who is told to ‘stand down’ and who then willfully dives into the pool after the order is given is liable to disqualification on the recommendation of the Starter and concurrence of the Referee.

A swimmer who may overbalance and fall into the pool after being told to ‘stand down’ is not liable to disqualification.

Finishing and Turning
When finishing a race the timekeepers press their stopwatch when the swimmer touches the wall. To finish correctly in breaststroke and butterfly events, both hands must contact the wall at the same time. In freestyle and backstroke events, touching with one hand is permitted. These rules also apply when turning.

Exiting the Pool
Except for a false start and legs of relays (other than the final leg), swimmers shall not leave their lane or exit the pool until the Referee’s whistle has sounded after the finish of the race. Swimmers must swim under the lane ropes to the closest side of the pool.

NON-COMPLIANCE WITH THESE RULES CAN RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION OF A SWIMMER BY THE REFEREE.
