"You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart,
with all your soul, and with all your strength.
And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.
You shall teach them diligently to your children,
and shall talk of them when you sit in your house,
when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up."
Deuteronomy 6:5-7

How do I start homeschooling?

The answer to this question is as varied as the families who have chosen to homeschool. You can get many of the questions of how many hours and more details in the regulations and what to do info below. While CKHSA is for support, we are unable to to provide curricula by state law. However, we do realize how overwhelming the 'homeschool world' can seem and we have gathered a list of links where you can find some wonderful information for beginning homeschoolers. You can get some great information and support from this homeschool website.....KY Homeschool chat room This site also has some of our state leaders to help you get started or to encourage you along the path of homeschooling. You'll want to visit Christian Homeschool Fellowship for some valuable information and encouragement for homeschoolers. Be sure to click on their "Getting Started" link written for those considering or starting homeschooling. We also encourage you to attend our meetings each month and seek advice from other homeschoolers there.

Do you supply the books I will need for homeschooling?

No. CKHSA is simply for support. We do not supply textbooks or homeschooling supplies. To select the books and other curricula appropriate for your family, visit our Homeschooling Links page to find an appropriate vendor for your needs.

What are the homeschooling regulations in KY?

"Homeschooling is a family driven enterprise". Keeping copies on computer and hard copies is a great idea.
Homeshcooling is almost mainstream now. There are more Homeschoolers per capita in Winchester presently.
It is legitimate to homeschool in Ky. You have Gods permission, filling out paper work is not asking permission it is merely notifying the state so they can keep their paper work in order.
Many co-op to trade off talents this is not homeschooling. To homeschool you must teach your own child you dont homeschool someone elses child. In Ky there are only two kinds of schools........ Private and public. Homeschooling is considered a private school.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO TO HOMESCHOOL IN KY?

  1. Teach 1050 hours or 175 days at 6 hours per day.
  2. Must teach in English (speaking the language).
  3. Maintain an attendance record.
  4. Keep some evidence of progress (report card).
  5. Notify the school district with in two weeks of start of school.
  6. Be aware you are subject to inspection.
There are no rules (or requirments) about the education of the parents teaching at present time.

Now for further explanaition of what Numbers five and six actually mean.

5. Notify the school district in writing. Address the letter to Mr Lee Superintendent of schools on Lexington Ave. Here is a simple example of what can be said......... This is to inform you that (childs name), (childs age) at (the address you homeschool)will be homeschooling for the year 2002 - 2003. Sign and neatly type or write your letter. It may also be a good idea to send it certified for proof in case there should be any question whether or not sent it.

Also on a side note if you get any title one letters from the school simply mark the appropriate boxes and return in the stamped addressed envelope they provide. It will save you further hassels.

6.Be aware you are subject to inspection. All Ky schools are open to be inspected by usually the state DPP by Ky law. However the US constitution states that no one enter your home without a warrent or your permission. So it appears to be a line that can be blurry depending upon which side of the fence you are on. (The state or the family). If you join HSLDA they can advise you how to handle this if anything like this should ever happen. This is not a normal occourance though there have been very isolated cases in Ky. We have been very fortunate in Clark county to have had a social relationship with the local officials.

One thing to remember if the DPP or social services does come to your home it is best to not let them in But NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE THEM YOUR RECORD BOOK OR PAPERWORK! .
