On March 28th 1997 ABC (I believe the initials stand for Another Bad Cancelation) aired the last episode of The City which survived only sixteen months after its changeover on November 13th 1995 from the daytime drama Loving. It featured an innovative style for daytime television with its videotape to film look, giant elaborate open sets, plenty of moving camera shots from all angles of the set, lots of outdoor filming which was unlike the other soaps and the best cast assembled for daytime.

The City had a very loyal following of fans which did everything they could to keep their favorite soap on the air, but it wasn't enough, TPTB had already made up their minds and canceled the young soap without even considering changing its poor time slot, the lack of affiliates carrying it and giving it little or no advertising.

At the time of its cancelation, the storylines were the best in daytime, new viewers were tuning in and ratings were on the rise. But it was too late to save The City. This page will serve as a reminder of how great a soap The City was and that it will continue to live on in our memories for a very long time.

I like the "LIVE" version of The Beatles "The End"
that I found, with the crowd yelling and clapping
it makes it sound like The City went out in a blaze of glory!

I created the animated City GIF that used to be at the top of this page using Ulead GIF Animator and my Hauppauge WinCast/TV card from a VHS copy (Thanks Gerri!) of the first City episode which aired on November 13th 1995, I think it came out pretty good. It's a little large in size (498k) and takes about two minutes to load with a 28.8 modem.
