Air Travel Within Pakistan

Most travelers will arrive in Pakistan in Islamabad or Karachi. If your destination is Northern areas, Islamabad will be starting point of your travel. From Karachi you can take a two hour domestic flight to Islamabad.

There are currently four airlines operating within Pakistan for travel within the country:

Purchasing air tickets after arrival in Pakistan can be much cheaper than buying from outside Pakistan, however, you can be delayed because of non availability of seats. PIA is the only carrier that operates flights to Northern areas.

Road Travel

Public transport is cheap and will take you to every part of Pakistan. However, you will only find comfortable buses between large cities. On most other routes, buses are very basic. Buses leave several times a day from Islamabad to Gilgit and Skardu and take about 16 hours to Gilgit and 24 to Skardu. Unless you are planning to spend time in interior Pakistan, it is advisable to fly between Karachi and Islamabad as the road journey can take several days.

Train Travel

Trains connect most major cities and towns of Pakistan. Air-conditioned coaches and sleepers are available on trains on major routes. However, it may hard to find a seat in these coaches. Generally, the train service is prone to delays.
