Against the Bin Tax - For the Environment
Vote Cieran Perry
Cabra/Glasnevin Ward - Dublin City Council

I am totally opposed to the unfair and unjust Bin Tax. This is another example of this government's double taxation on ordinary workers and residents.

Remember, Fianna Fail leader Bertie Ahern insulted ordinary workers when he called us "spongers". This from the man who claims he cannot remember where the brown envelopes ended up.

The huge support across Dublin for the Anti-Bin Tax Campaign shows how angry people are about the blatant attempt by Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Labour to introduce yet another tax on those of us who already pay the bulk of tax in this country. People realise that the Bin Tax is the first step towards privatisation of the waste collection service and the resulting loss of jobs and worsening service. For four years the courts, the police and the prisons have been used to try to intimate us, but still the majority are NOT paying. Only 1 in 3 people have fully paid the Bin Tax. Nowhere in Dublin are the Council confident enough to stop collecting our bins.

Taxpayers already pay for waste services, while the real polluters - like factories and farmers which cause 85% of waste - pay little.

The Bin Tax is just another of the many stealth taxes imposed by this government.

I am opposed to any attempt to privatise any essential council services. This will lead to price rises, job losses and a reduction in quality and service.

I will oppose the planned introduction of water charges.

We need a genuine and attainable waste management strategy. We must increase recycling programmes and reduce packaging at source.

  • More street sweepers in residential areas and at weekends.
  • Return of regular council junk collection.
  • Award schemes for schools and youth recycling projects.
  • Reduction and active monitoring of industrial emissions and effluent.
  • Local fast food outlets made accountable for their customers?litter.
  • Local job opportunities in waste management and recycling to be considered.
