Feature Dog

Fresca is a tiny, spayed female who is a fantastic, tough leader. She was a very important member of the original team that I bought from Jim Orvis, and she is still one of my first choices for the main team.

Fresca looks as though she may have some border collie heritage. She also has the short, mincing gait and high energy level that is common to most border collies. Fresca's father is actually unknown, and I have always wondered whether a wandering border collie might have jumped the fence one night and fathered a litter. The father who is listed on her pedigree is the male who had the closest spot to the mother dog.

As a two-year-old leader, Fresca was great in training but would quit under the pressure of a race. After I bought her, I turned her into a house dog. Ever since then, she has been a fantastic leader who never quits no matter what.

Since that first year, Fresca has led for every step of every race that I have run. She also led the Olympic Torch run. She is not only a great leader, but a great friend.

Fresca has always been a very submissive dog. The other dogs seem to love rolling her over, and yet she will fearlessly lead the team anywhere. She has the sweetest nature, but she also has boundless energy and will charge right up the steepest mountainside even in the heat of summer.
