When I first ran him, Ghost was a hard driving leader but very poor at passing other teams. In my first race, he took the team around the course with thrilling speed but had to be dragged past other teams by his co-leader Thelma. Nonetheless, we had the fastest time in the first heat. We followed this up with a good run on the second day to win the race. In our second race of the season, I had to walk up front and pull Ghost past every team we passed. By the third race, he was starting to catch on, and by the end of the winter, he was a seasoned pro.
The following winter I ran the Seeley 100 mile race, and that is when I discovered Ghost�s desire to explore. Every time we came to a fork in the trail, Ghost would choose the trail that no other teams had gone down, and he would reluctantly turn back when I commanded him on to the race trail. When I ran my first Race To The Sky 350 mile race, he got so insistent about not following the race trail, that I finally had to demote him from the lead position and move him further back in the team.
Ghost has sired two litters in our kennel. Rose�s litter of six was born in 2001, and Breaker�s litter of five was born in 2002. All of Ghost�s offspring will lead although two of them are still a bit flaky sometimes. Ghost himself is really great at training young leaders because he has the determination and the strength to pull them past any distraction. He also inspires them with his enthusiasm to run.
