Los Angeles  Stan Levey, considering five outstanding jazz players from among the Howard Rumsey All-Stars, thought LaFaro to be "a guy who could easily be the next great bass player. And he's only 20!"  (John Tynan, "Stan the Man" Downbeat (20 March 1958), p. 45.

Spring

Los Angeles  Sometime between January and March, LaFaro's instrument, a Mittenwald double bass, was stolen. His sister, Helene, recalls that Scott had stopped momentarily in front of a local store to make a purchase, parking his car curbside. His bass was on the rear seat. When he returned to the car the bass was gone. (Conversation with Helene LaFaro-Fernandez, August 1997).

DeFranco remembers LaFaro practicing his bass while reading from the H. Klos (pronounced 'klo-zay') clarinet method book. He thought that Scott felt that practicing in this way facilitated his fingering speed. (Conversation with Buddy DeFranco, 7 August 2002)

Summer  Los Angeles  "I [Paul Bley] had a band in LA at the 'It Club' just after the band with Ornette [Coleman] at the Hillcrest Club (1958). I remember putting Scotty in front of the vibes on the bandstand because he was the only bassist in the world at that time who could play the melody to the complex charts. The band included Scotty, Don Cherry, Billy Higgins, Bobby Hutcherson and myself" (E-mail, 8 July 1996, from Carol Goss, I A I Media.)

Summer?  Los Angeles  Unreleased Recording:  with Paul Bley. ('Interview Questions For Paul Bley' by Darcy Gray, question 13:

GRAY:  "I've always been curious about your early association with Scott LaFaro. I assume you played with him before he joined Bill Evans. Was that the beginning of your preference for interactive bass players?"

BLEY:  "My first LP was made for Stinson Records, with Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clarke. My second date was with Charlie Mingus. Red Mitchell was the third and Scotty was the fourth." (http://members.gnn.com/improvart/bley.htm)

-- San Francisco Chronicle (October 5, 1958) p. 19.--

Review [of the Rollins quartet gig] by Dick Hadlock, "Heard in Person: Sonny Rollins" Down Beat (December 11, 1958) p. 49.

" .  .  . Scott LaFaro is a young man with an excellent, if unorthodox, command of his instrument. He swings impressively, but elects to use a low bridge [on his instrument], resulting in string slap and a diffusion of tone that makes careful listening difficult. Nevertheless, he should become a major bassist with a very personal style. .  .  . "
