A Tribute in Honor of:
The firefighters who give their lives to save others
John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Never Forget The 343 Firefighters Of 9-11
The Houston Fire Department has more than once been criticized for its aggressive interior structure firefighting.  Though this is, without a doubt, an inherently dangerous occupation, and aggressive interior operations does indeed increase the risk to firefighters, one must consider the lives saved due to those brave men and women who have put their own lives on the line.  No Houston firefighter desires to lose their life trying to save a house, but the seeds of willingness to fight fire so aggressively, to risk everything to save everything, are planted in a soil of desire to never give up on a salvageable victim.

At the risk of sounding cocky, or maybe foolish, I can say that in my life I fear very little.  Sadly, I have been forced to face my two greatest fears as a firefighter.  First, I have been woken by the sound of the phone ringing to tell me that a firefighter, a friend, a brother, had lost his life trying to save the lives of people who didn't even care to stick around while he stuck out his neck for them.  And second, pulling up on a scene ready to save a random motorist trapped in his vehicle, only to find that I was too late.  Then to find that this random motorist was not random at all but a firefighter, a friend, a brother, a man that I played chess with daily at the fire station.  I have cried at funerals but that is not enough.  I owe it to these men, these heroes, that I NEVER forget them and the heart with which they did their jobs.
