| I had barely started my first K-12 in training when Capt. Jahnke had lost his life. Having now gotten a couple of years under my belt at Houston I have found a trend. Everyone I have met either considered him their best friend or wished they had known him. I don't think anyone has said that they knew him and not said he was their best friend. That to me says a lot about a man whose name echoes through this fire department like a cayote howl at the Grand Canyon. This city needs to recognize this loss, and the importance that it showed of having four men on an apparatus, is NOT something to use as leverage in contract negotiations. The right thing for City Council to do wouldn't even require firefighter help. Pass a law requiring four on an apparatus and show that we aren't just hearing, but are in fact listening, and learning, when the voices of those who have fallen echo.
