London
London is the capital of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and at the centre of global affairs. London is a major world city, despite its declining population at the middle of the 20th century, and is today steadily growing, currently having a population of about 7.2 million people. From the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th, London was the world's largest city, and reached a peak of 9 million people in 1939. London is one of the big 3 in the financial world, along side New York and Tokyo (Tokyo is currently the world's largest city.) As well as being one of the world's largest banking centres, it is a major multi-cultural centre, with people there from all over the world, including countries of the commenwealth. Although London's city population is no longer at its peak, London's urban area is at about 12 million people, with an estimated metro region of 17 million.
London is not renowned for it's skyscrapers, unlike New York City, or Hong Kong, but nevertheless has some fine examples of tall buildings. London's tallest building is One Canada Square, in the Canary Wharf area of London's east end, which rises to 235 metres tall. After this, the second place is joint, with HSBC tower, and Citigroup tower, which are both slightly short of the 200 metre mark. London's most unique skyscraper is the Swiss RE tower, with its spiralling glass, and perculiar shape. Tower 42, located in'The City' of London, was the city's tallest building from 1980 to 1991, and is 183 metres tall.

London has boasted many world firsts, including: it was the first city with over 6 million inhabitants; the first city to have an underground railway; and the first city to have sewers on its huge scale. It also has many world class museums and art galleries.

The London Eye: the world's largest observation wheel, and London's most popular tourist attraction
The London Eye, the world's biggest ferris wheel at 135 metres high, was built as part of the city's Millennium celebrations. The wheel takes an hour to make one full rotation, meaning that after half an hour inside, there are superb views across the capital. Behind the Eye is the Shell centre, formerly the world's largest conference centre. Unlike the now defunct Millennium dome (which is empty and unused) th Eye has proved a very more successful venture.
