Canary Wharf is located in the East end of London, in the heart of the Docklands. In the late 1980s, part of the crumbling Docklands area was redeveloped, centring on a 235 metre landmark tower, and neo-classical piazzas. Today, the Canary Wharf district is London's main high-rise district, containing 7 buildings over 153 metres (500 feet), and 3 of those are 200 metres and over. An estimated 50,000 people work in the Canary Wharf district. Although this is just a tenth of the amount that work in 'the City' (square mile), the figure grows annually, along with the construction of more tall towers.
The tallest building in Canary Wharf is the original skyscraper, completed in 1991, known commonly as Canary Wharf Tower, but officially as One Canada Square. The second place is joint between HSBC tower and Citigroup tower, both 200 metres. These 3 buildings are London's tallest, as well as the UK's tallest. They also come in as some of Europe's tallest. |
