| The great dome of Saint Paul's cathedral is one of London's greatest landmarks. There have been several cathedrals on this site, but the prsent one was completed in 1710, at the completion of the two baroque towers on the west front. The architect, Sir Christopher Wren, was old by the time it was complete. The dome reaches to a height of 112 metres, and is the 3rd largest dome in the word, after the Yamoussoukro dome in The Ivory coast, and Saint Peter's in Rome. Old Saint Paul's (destroyed in the great fire - 1666) was for some time the world's tallest structure, with a massive 161 metre tall tower/spire, larger even than the 19th century gothic revival buildings in Germany. |
