Chicken-Head Records was formed to support Kung-Fu Chicken, the band that I was in up until recently. The reset of the guys moved up to San Francisco and I guess at some point they started taking themselves seriously. So after five years, three tours, 4 guitar players, and 7 drummers later I'm out, leaving the singer as the only original member. With that being said, the Label has grown to encompass several other bands and projects. I'm in a new band now called Varant Majarian that takes from old school hard core ala Bad Brains & Uniform Choice.

We do things DIY all the way, most of our packages are made from cardstock and are hand folded, stapled, and collated by us.  We've done a couple comps and a couple full lengths and plan to keep releasing music that we love to get it out there to everyone we can. We also do a Zine that's published quarterly, help organize shows, provide crash space for touring bands, distro other bands/labels stuff, & work with others  that are like minded for a healthy and productive scene.

When we release something we normally do the following:                                                                          We pay for half and do all the grunt work, errand running, and everything else to get the product out. The band pays for half and does whatever they can to help out. Once the project is completed, we split the total number of records in half and we keep half, the band gets half. For a split, we do it in thirds: both bands a third each and the label a third, for a comp, by the number of bands. The deal is done. No need for contracts or anything else. The best distro is the bands themselves selling their stuff at shows, so we use that to get the music out there. Because of our packaging and the willingness to fold 1000's of paper booklets and sleeves, most projects come out to cost 70-1.00 per CD. Most wind up in the 85 cent range, so for say 300 dollars you'd get 330 CD's on a split for example. Our deals are better than anyone else out there, look around, try to get on a few comps and you'll know what I'm talking about.

We've been in the scene a long time and want to keep it alive. We don't have time for elitist attitudes, shiftless grubbers, or rock stars still working at Starbucks.
