Executive Summary

Both atmospheric and agricultural inputs have been found to increase concentrations of pollutants and toxic compounds in streams, lakes and other aquatic water bodies in middle hills of Nepal, and predictions indicate increases in future. Studies in high altitude mountain areas in Europe have demonstrated a selective trapping due to cold condensation of some of the persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and there are indications of long-range transport of some micro pollutants {e.g., heavy metals, NO3 and SO4 etc.} to high altitudes of the Himalayas. However, very little data are available on the levels of micro pollutants and their relationships to the altitudinal variations, climatic variations and trends of agricultural practices in the Himalayan regions. This proposal is an attempt to evaluate the environmental levels of micro pollutants in water bodies and aquatic organisms (fish as an indicator species), their relationships with the altitudinal variations, climatic variations and trends of agricultural practices. We will use international protocols and state of the art analytical methods, as well as a Quality Assurance Program. The focal study locations will be the lakes from different altitudinal gradients in Nepal.

The research work will not violate any ethical considerations. The quality assurance will be given due considerations. The results will be beneficial locally as well as regionally and globally. The subsequent outputs and recommendations will be made available to all the stakeholders and parties involved, as well as any other relevant/interested organisations. Results will be presented in the form of research articles and disseminated through seminars and conferences. In addition, a draft report will be prepared to share among the stakeholders, if deemed necessary.

The details will be available later.
