Training Tips
While these tips are specifically mentioned for Chesapeakes please note that they apply to virtually every breed.

Rule #1... BE CONSISTENT... ESTABLISH GROUND RULES WHICH YOU WILL INTEND TO ENFORCE THROUGHOUT THE LIFE OF THE DOG.
Example:If there will be a room or furniture which will be off limit to the adult then do not allow the puppy access to them now.
Rule #2... BE CONSIDERATE... LEARN WHAT YOUR PUPPY/DOG IS CAPABLE OF ACHIEVING AND DON'T EXPECT MORE OF IT THAN IT IS ABLE TO GIVE.
Example:An 8 wk old puppy is incapable of being crated or left alone for long hours without soiling its' area.  Housebreaking will proceed very quickly by taking the puppy out very frequently.  We often take a puppy out every 15-30 minutes at this age.  Another example would be an older dog should not be cooped up all day long and then be expected to lay quietly around while you unwind from a long day at work.  Dog's need to excersise and if they don't get enough, left to their own devices, they can become very inventive!  Usually to your dismay, (i.e. chewing, barking, digging and a host of other negative behaviors.)
Rule #3... BE CONSCIENTIOUS... IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE DOG'S PHYSICAL NEEDS IT IS IMPERATIVE TO MEET PHSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS AS WELL.
Example: Lack of training and socialization are the predominent reasons behind aggression, behavior issues, and forfeiture of a Chesapeake.  Their intelligence and desire to protect what is theirs, if not properly and carefully molded, will ultimately lead to their demise.

Careful consideration should be given before acquiring any dog, in particular the Chesapeake.  If you do not have the time or the energy to train, socialize, and excercise one then consider getting a stuffed animal.  The protective nature of the Chesapeake does not lend itself to being a 'stay at home' dog.  Training and socialization should begin the day the dog enters your household.  Assuming you have gotten a puppy from a breeder who adheres to federal regulations we will assume that that will be 8 weeks of age at the earliest.  The same first day  rules apply if you are getting a Chessy older than 8 weeks.
