The Chesapeake is a magnificent animal.  Faithful, protective, and loving.  It IS NOT for everyone though.  The same characteristics which make them irresistable to many can be distinct disadvantages.  They ARE NOT 'YARD ART'.  An un-trained and un-socialized animal can lead to severe liabillities.  Unchecked protectiveness is nothing short of potential aggression.  While it is true that all dogs should be socialized and trained there are many breeds  that will flourish despite this education.  The Chesapeake will not.  This breed should be chosen for its' temperament, not its' appearance.
If you are considering getting a Chessy then read this article first,  Don't Buy A Chesapeake. (You will need to hit the back button on your browser to return to this page.)
If you have satisfied yourself that the Chesapeake IS the right dog for you then here are the steps that you should take to fulfill your desire.
Plan to spend a good deal of time researching breeders, their dogs, and pedigrees.  While we all breed to the same standard of perfection, not everyone has the same 'look'.  A good place to begin is at the American Chesapeake Club's Breeders Directory.
Once you have located the breeder that produces  the  type of dog you are looking for, inquire as to their next available litter.  You may or may not need to be placed on a waiting list and you may be required to give a deposit.  ALWAYS CALL BEFORE GOING TO VISIT!
Look at the ADULTS... not the puppies!  All puppies are beautiful and all puppies grow up to be adults.
Be prepared to go through an interview similar to a Grand Jury Investigation.  Breeders put a tremendous amount of time and Energy into their dogs and they want them to have only one home in their life.   Answer all questions honestly with yourself as well as the breeder.  This will ensure that you get the best dog for you,
Most good breeders have a waiting list so be prepared to wait a bit.  Use this time wisely.  Locate a good veterinarian in your area.  Find a trainer or obedience club in your vicinity.  Prepare the dogs quarters both indoors and out.  Read as many books  as you can on the breed and dogs in general.  And the Best part... START BUYING YOUR NEW BABY LOTS OF TOYS!!!
Follow your breeders instructions implicitly.  If you have any questions or problems contact the breeder immmediately.
