WELCOME TO CHILE

Arboles

Chile is a very long country located in the extreme southwest of South America. The closest neighbours include Argentina to the east, and Bolivia and Peru to the north. To travel Chile’s 2,500 mile length would be like going from the southern tip of Baja Peninsula, Mexico, to Ketchikan, Alaska. The population of Chile is approximately 14 million, 80% of them living in urban areas. The official language is Spanish. Santiago, the capital of Chile, was founded on February, 12th, 1541, and is nested against The Andes, with a population over five millions. The climate of Santiago is mediterranean.

Built in the heart of the Mapuche homeland, poised between Lago Villarica and the smoking volcano of the same name, Pucon offers something for every interest. Two national parks and one private reserve protect ancient forest habitat, a variety of rivers more than satisfies

fishermen and whitewater boaters, skiing and mountaineering are possible on the slopes of Volcan Villarica, and the black sand beach soaks up the sun all day. At night, you can take your pick of nearby hotsprings. The climate of Pucon in this time is ....

CURRENCY
The currency unit is the PESO
(1 US$ = approx. 700 pesos).

FOREIGN CASH
Foreign cash is not generally in use. Hotels may waive the value-added tax (IVA) if you are a foreigner, and pay in US dollars cash.

CREDITS CARDS
Credits cards are widely used and accepted. The most commonly accepted cards are Visa, Master Card and Diners Club. Small towns mostly have cash economies.

MONEY EXCHANGE
You can exchange money at any established "Casa de Cambios" or Bank office at market driven exchange rates.

ELECTRIC ENERGY
Domestic current: 220V, 50Hz.

SECURITY
Most Chilean cities have fairly good security standards. Nevertheless, it is not advisable to be too confident. Never leave your valuables unattended.

INTERNATIONAL PHONE CALLS
From Chile, international calls are cheap, the service being efficient. Multicarrier services are available at almost every phone. It is not advisable to make international calls from your hotel room as is usually has a surcharge. Try to use the public phone in the lobby or the public phone cabins.
