In Memory of ASHLEY ELIZABETH PIERCE
FOR MELANOMA AWARENESS
Ashley was just a normal teenager, living a normal life when she contracted Melanoma ..At that time,we knew next to nothing about it..!

Like many other people today, we were under the illusion it could be dealt with easily and everything would be ok...

After all, its just a Skin Cancer isn't it???

Nothing to it really..!

Just scrape it off and it'll be ok, right???

Wrong!

If you are lucky and it is caught in time, then yes, this can be the case...but for Ashley, and the many others like her, it was a down hill battle of drugs and chemo to keep this dreadful disease at bay, and she, like many others before her, lost her battle in the end..

This website is to promote awareness of Melanoma, the causes and preventions...

Any monies collected will go toward Ashleys Scholarship fund for young artists at the University of Missula, please click here for details.... The Scholarship...

A simple mole can be deadly if it turns into Melanoma..

It is very important to check any moles on a regular basis...The worst ones are irregular shaped..almost like a map of a country with ragged edges...They don't even have to be big...But if they change shape at all, grow 'babies' on the top, have a very dark pigment, itch, bleed, or, (and this is very important) you feel that there is something wrong with it, then PLEASE get a check immediately..

I have been asked to add freckle awareness too..as one person actually had Melanoma in a freckle, another in a tiny mole on her toe....Mine showed up in mole form, just below my ankle..

This is how it looks now after surgery, and six months healing..now, can you imagine that on your face!!

There is no need to become too paranoid about it, just be aware that Melanoma can show up anywhere

Anything out of the ordinary needs to be identified and biopsied as soon as possible..

If it is nothing, you will have lost nothing, and will have peace of mind, if it is something,it could save your life...

Excerpt from "Letters to a Young Poet"

Rainer Maria Rilke

"You have had many sadnesses, large ones, which passed. And you say that even this passing was difficult and upsetting for you. But please, ask yourself whether these large sadnesses haven't rather gone right through you. Perhaps many things inside you have been transformed; perhaps somewhere, someplace deep inside your being, you have undergone important changes while you were sad.

The only sadnesses that are dangerous are the ones that we carry around in public in order to drown them out with the noise...If only it were possible for us to see farther than our knowledge reaches. and even a little beyond the outworks of our presentiment, perhaps we would bear out sadnesses with greater trust than we have in our joys.

For they are the moments when something new has entered us, something unknown; our feelings grow mute in shy embarrassment, everything in us withdraws, a silence arises, and the new experience, which no one knows, stands in the midst of it all and says nothing.

It seems to me that almost all our sadnesses are moments of tension, which we feel as paralysis because we no longer hear our astonished emotions living. because we are alone with the unfamiliar presence that has entered us; because everything we trust and are used to is for a moment taken away from us; because we stand in the midst of a transition where we cannot remain standing.

That is why the sadness passes: the new presence inside us, the presence that has been added, has entered our heart, has gone into its innermost chamber and is no longer even there,-is already in our bloodstream...We could easily be made to believe that nothing has happened, and yet we have changed, as a house that a guest has entered changes."
