Champions of FREEDOM is a roleplaying campaign based in the Mutants & Masterminds 2nd Edition system. Its players are based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

This campaign is set in an alternate universe version of the Freedom City setting. Here super-powered people never existed until an intergalactic vessel crashed near the city and a pair of alien powers began bestowing superhuman abilities on citizens.

One of the aliens, called The Benefactor, has established himself as dictator of Freedom City and now uses it as his base of operations for a campaign to conquer the world. Worse yet, he has bestowed superpowers on a loyal cadre of sadistic individuals, called The Vigilant Watch. These super-powered thugs maintain iron-fisted control over the populace through fear and violence.

The players will take on the role of members of an underground rebellion called FREEDOM. These citizens of extraordinary courage seek to overthrow The Benefactor and have been gifted with superpowers by the second alien, called The Justice. They must lead a deadly double-life, by day living & working amongst the power structure they seek to bring down and by night disguising their identity in order to go forth and fight for justice & liberty.

Champions of FREEDOM seeks to combine the identities & ideals of the Golden Age with a setting & adversaries of an Iron Age variety. The characters must be more then heroes, they must stand as symbols to a populace desperately in need of hope. Additionally the setting reinforces the classic requirement for a �secret identity� as characters day-time selves may well know and interact with the very villains they battle after dark.

We invite you to share this unfolding story of a team of underdog heroes, battling a tyrannical power that has corrupted the city they call home. Theirs is a tale of danger, cunning, and the irrepressible heroism of the human spirit.

What is Roleplaying?
A roleplaying game, or RPG, is a game of the imagination, where a group of players get together and create fictional characters, then play out their adventures around a table.

Each player creates a character that becomes their �in-game role�. During the course of the game they make this character�s decisions and describe what they say & do.

One player takes the role of Game Master, or GM, and describes the setting and the challenges the players encounter. This player will also act as referee for the rules and mediate any disputes that may occur during play.

Roleplaying Terms
Adventure: A specific roleplay story.
Campaign: A series of linked adventures.
Character Creation: The process by which a player creates their character.
Character Sheet: A record of a character, including whatever details, notes, game statistics, and background information a player would need during a session.
In-Game: A term referring to the actions and information that occurs within the fictional world of the game.
Non-Player Character (NPC): A character in a roleplay game whose actions are controlled by the Game Master.
Out of Game: A term referring to the parts of a session that occur outside of the game world (jokes, getting food, questions to clarify game rules, etc).
Paper & Pencil Game: A term sometimes used to refer to roleplay games, specifically table-top games like Mutants & Masterminds, which use character sheets for record keeping.
Player Character (PC): A character in a roleplay game whose actions are controlled by a player.
Session: An individual period of roleplaying, usually an evening or afternoon.

Dice
Most roleplay games use dice to simulate the random factors that occur in life, and to provide an equalizing factor for players. These dice come in a wide variety of shapes and ranges of possibility.

Mutants & Masterminds utilizes a twenty-sided dice (d20) system.

What is Mutants & Masterminds?
Mutants & Masterminds is a roleplay game system published by Green Ronin Publishing. It focuses on the superhero genre, where the characters possess fantastic powers and face incredible challenges.

First appearing in 2002 a second edition of the game�s rules was introduced in 2005.

The first game setting provided for M&M was Freedom City. The Champions of Freedom campaign uses a modified version of this setting.
