Course Description

ABF 350: Management Information Systems


This course provides students with an introduction to Information Systems (IS) and Information Technology (IT) and their use in an increasingly competitive and global business world. It emphasizes the management perspective and the need to have updated information on which business decisions are made. Particular emphasis is placed on the system user's role in project development and implementation of a successful IS system. MS Excel, MS Access and HTML will be utilized in business case analysis.

Students will be required to learn basic HTML for web design, without the advantage of a design tool, that is, using a text editor only.

Major Course Goals and Objectives

  1. Develop an understanding of the fundamental Information Systems concepts and theories.
  2. Develop an understanding of the role Information Systems play in organizations and how these roles relate to organizational objectives and organizational structure.
  3. Develop an understanding of the global impact of Information Systems.
  4. Develop an understanding of the ethical responsibilities of an Information Technology professional and the impact to organizations.
  5. Develop an understanding of the ways that IT may be used to obtain a competitive advantage.
  6. Develop an understanding of how Information Systems are developed.
  7. Develop the skills required to create spreadsheet-based systems that may be used to support organizational decision making.
  8. Develop skills for basic web design.
  9. Develop an understanding of the impact of web design to users who access these pages.
  10. Develop skills required to create database systems that may be used to support organizational data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  11. Develop skills required to use presentation software.
  12. Learn to work with and respect others, regardless of individual differences.
  13. Prepare yourself for the work force, while enjoying the course.
