The Sepik is a diverse area of islands, open coastline, good beaches and rugged mountain ranges. For the adventurous traveller it stands as one of the most interesting areas of PNG. The focus of the area is the Sepik River. This oily-brown flow of water snakes around for 1126km (698miles).
Travelling along this long river can be an unforgettable experience. Along its shores you will be able to photograph beautiful stilt houses and spectacular flora and fauna. Travel in dug-out canoes with crocodile-head prows, through the dawn mists and striking sunsets.
There are also good beaches and diving at Cape Moem and Vanimo. Also a standout attraction
is the culture of the Abalem people in the Maprik area (especially their distinctive haus tambarans, and decorative carvings). |
