If snorkelling and diving are your passion then Madang Province is the destination for you.
Sitting on the northern edge of the Island this area consists of a lush green coastal strip backed by some of the most rugged mountains in PNG. Very close to shore are a string of beautiful islands, some containing still active volcanoes, and all surrounded by palm trees. Lying in the middle of the coastal stretch is the town of Madang, often described as 'the prettiest in the Pacific'. Perched on a peninsula jutting into the sea, Madang is surrounded by water on most sides and is a beautiful place to walk or cycle around. You will want to stop regularly to take photographs of the picture-postcard scenery.
There are parks, markets, waterways and a unique golf course which you must try. Bring plenty of golf balls as local kids do fancy them as projectiles for sling-shots to bring down flying foxes from high up in the palm trees. Some of the places to visit are Kranket Island, with its beautiful lagoon, and Long Island, with abundant bird life. |
