Since Mother’s Day was just this past Sunday,
I’ve decided to make this week’s column a tribute to mothers of PC,
past and present.
Best Irish Mom: Mary Scanlon
Whether she’s having one of her famous St.
Paddy’s Day get-togethers for family and friends, or trying her best
to ensure that her sons are making the right life choices, Mary is a warm
and loving(albeit somewhat interfering!) mother whose care and concern
for her family always shines through.
Best Psycho Mom: Julie
I have to admit that even though I knew how
much it would hurt everyone else involved, I still had to cheer when Julie
took baby Christina and disappeared. Her scenes with Christina were
incredibly poignant and touching---who can ever forget Julie’s giving birth
in the abandoned fairy tale castle (an apt metaphor for Julie’s own loveless
existence up to that point), or when she was standing in the snow , holding
baby Christina in her arms just before relinquishing her to Lucy? Even
though Julie definitely has a few screws loose, I’m still sure that her
love for her daughter will always be paramount , and will prompt her to
do the right by Christina.
Best Non-biological Mom: Lucy
Although she has yet to have a biological
child of her own , Lucy’s devotion to and care for surrogate daughter Serena
and adopted daughter Christina prove once again that motherhood is more
about love than genetics or biology.
Best Mom-to-be: Eve
After having tragically lost her first child,
I can only imagine how much having this baby must mean to Eve. Her warm,
tender-hearted personality, combined with all of the love she has to give
is going to make this one lucky baby in that he or she will be able to
call Eve "Mommy".
Best She-devil Mom: Courtney
Gone but not forgotten, Courtney is one wicked
scheming Mamma, who is similar to GH’s Carly in that no matter what else
she may do wrong , or however many nasty plots she may concoct, her
love for her son is the one thing that stands alone, pure and undefiled.
When everyone thought Neil was dying of leukemia, Courtney’s bedside vigil
brought many tears to my eyes, and regardless of how much I loved to hate
her in every other respect, I will be the first to admit her devotion to
her son knows no bounds.
Unfortunately, there are a few Mom’s in PC
who only qualify for the wall of shame in this portrait gallery, including:
Worst Psycho-Mom: Kevin and Ryan’s mother
The less said about her, the better, this
original mother-from-hell only managed to do one thing right, and that
was to give birth to Kevin, one of daytime’s most incredibly nuanced tortured
hunks.
Worst Neurotic Mom: Estelle
At least verbally, if not downright physically
cruel and abusive towards her daughter Rachel, this old bat may be a loving
(if dippy) grandmother to Livvie, but one has to wonder---does a she-leopard
ever really change her spots? Meow!
Worst mother in absentia: Nicole
Julie’s chronically MIA Mom only materialized
a couple of times---the first time to bed her daughter’s colleague (and
husband-to-be) Chris, and later on during Julie’s trial in order to berate
her in person for screwing up her life so royally. Even in the aftermath
of Julie’s kidnapping, she couldn’t manage to stick around for more than
a couple of days before more pressing business called her elsewhere. No
wonder poor Julie felt neglected as a child---with parents like Bennett
and Nicole, she undoubtedly was!
In conclusion, I’d like to wish all you moms
out there a very happy belated mother’s day---I hope it was wonderful,
and would just like to add, that in soap land, as in reality, mothers and
their love are truly what make the world go ‘round! |
