Staining, Shellacing, and Tung Oil.
Tried different Behlen stains to find appropriate color. After making a test panel and giving a quick coat of shellac, decided to use a 50/50 mix of American Dark Walnut and Red Mahagony Stains
The Test Panel (Board on right has base colors, board on left is 50/50 mix without a tung oil coating.
Rifle Stained with 50/50 mix

Shellaced rifle to prevent lift off while using tung oil
Currently at four coats of tung oil
