We were supposed to have played for Eisner,  the president of Disney today.   At least that is what I was told a few days earlier back on the San Fransisco tour.   That was why we bought the new outfits from Siegal's.   Well,  it was one of the reasons.   To make an impression with Mr. Eisner,  and Disney.   But the gig today at the MCAS (Marine Corp Air Station) in Miramar was both strange and uneventful.

I was late getting to the the flight hanger.   I got there 5:30pm when I should've been there before 5pm.   I was stressed because I had to take my two boys to their dental checkups at 3:15pm,  and it lasted well beyond what I thought it would take.   We got outta there at 5pm and I had to go through rush hour traffic to get to the gig for the sound check.   I was just going to take my boys with me because I had no time to drop them off.

Things really turned out for the better.   My two sons loved the visit to the air base.   They got a chance to see some of the missiles and jets in the hanger adjacent to the where we were to perform.   It was great how everyone in the band was very understanding and everyone helped me get my drums set up.   And we were able to soundcheck by 6pm.   And after that I took the boys home and got dressed and returned to the gig just in time for the first set.

Overall,  the gig went well.   There was only so much one can expect from a private function.   It's obvious that playing at the clubs is more rewarding because the people come to see the band perform.   Sometimes I feel like background music at these private/corporate gigs,  but the pay is considerably more,  and helps pay the bills.   One of the best things about Big Time Operator is the fact that we are very popular at the clubs and also successful at the private functions as well.   With a lot of bands it's either one or the other.

The sound tonight was atrocious!   I mean,  what more can one expect in a Navy Flight Hangar.   The sound bounced around all over the place and there was no definition.   No wonder we couldn't make an impression with the people there,  everything was all warbled,  despite the fact that we had an excellent sound system and sound crew.

The guy that runs sound says he does this gig all the time in the hanger.   I mean he seriously said that the agency running this whole affair hold private and corporate parties here all the time.  Huh?  Oh Well...

Well,  I never did get a chance to see or meet the president of Disney, but I was told he was there.   At least we looked sharp in our new zoot suits and shark skin outfits.   And we got the best compliment of the evening;  we were told that despite the fact the crowd was lame and uninterested,  the agent that booked us for this gig said that she was impressed by the fact that although this was a tough audience,  we still played with energy and conviction.   That was a nice compliment,  and to me it made the evening feel a whole lot better.
