a poetic journey
about me

June 14, 1998          aches and pains

My wife and I woke up around 12:30pm.   It seems that the week's busy events and the birthday party had all caught up with us.   Well its good that I caught up on some sleep,  for I sure needed it badly.

Today turned out to be a nice sunny day,  not too hot and not too cold.   It had been awhile since we've had nice weather like this.  It seems that this El Niño condition has changed the weather here in San Diego,  for the weather is usually pretty consistent,  as in nice and sunny the year 'round.

We went out to a Greek Cafe called Dino's in Claremont Square and had some chicken sandwiches and Greek salad.   Our two boys had the same along with some fries as well.   There was a young lady working the register who was quite rude,  and talking to another customer reaffirmed our observation.   We were about to complain to the manager about this young lady's attitude,  but decided to let it go at the last minute.   She was just probably having PMS or something.

After lunch we went to a nearby bookstore to browse around.   Then we traveled closer to home and treated the boys to some ice cream at a nearby Baskin Robbins.   I went to the adjacent drug store to pickup some batteries for one of Jordan's new toys he had gotten for his birthday yesterday.   After sitting outside at a table with a nice umbrella for shade and eating our ice cream,  we headed for home.   It was getting close to 4pm and I needed to get ready for the gig at Sea World tonight.

The Sea World gig had turned out to be successful,  thank God.   I know I have confidence in my own abilities as well as my fellow bandmates'.   It's just that I feel a performer's biggest fear is not getting an audience reaction,  of being rejected.   But we've got a strong selection of swing tunes.   Some are just the standard stuff that every other swing or big band has done.   Other's are our new arrangements or original material.  It's just that the way we do these tunes with a bit of a modern approach is what really makes an impact,  especially with the high school and college kids.   But alot of them do like it that we play that vintage sound.   I guess it's the alternative to the alternative.

Anyway,  my knees were really sore today and it worried me,  being that we had a tour to San Fransisco this week.   Another one of my biggest fears is to tear some knee cartilage.   The constant performing really takes its toll on the physical body,  and I must be careful.   I went home and iced my knees right away.   Then thought about ways to better take care of my knees so that I don't injure them.
