| ................onto the movie screen. | ||||||||||||||
| Bringing those pages in my history book alive was not always by my imagination. I had help from the big movie screen and the telly box. But little did I know that at that time most of those were made on a Hollywood back lot. A few though, were made on location and it was those movies I watched often. One of my most prestigous assignments was when I was selected to become an enlisted instructor at West Point. I was in awe when I arrived, this place where men were shaped to make history. I knew the history of West Point from book cover to book end but the first thing I did after I threw my duffle on my bunk was head up to the old cemetary to seek out a very special grave. That grave was of Marty Maher, an irish immigrant that, he too, was an enlisted instructor at West Point for sixty years. I knew him well because I read his book, "Bringing Up the Brass" and it was from that book that the movie "The Long Grey Line" was based on. I spent my past time going around all the places where the scenes were shot. I have visited many 'on' location places where movies had been made but this one was my all time favorite. "The Quiet Man". |
