Crete....An Island of Resistance
The history of Crete is in the people and their resistance against conquering armies. Control passed from the Greeks to Romans to Saracens, through the Byzantine Empire to Venice onto Turkey for two hundred years and finally the germans during WWII.
But Crete is also considered the cradle of western civilization and the ancient Minoan city of Knossos being the core. It is from that name that the word 'knowledge' originated. In almost every western language, to learn means to 'kno'w.
It is a well 'kno'wn fact the the best olive oil comes from Crete and most of the worlds raisens. I can personally state, the wine is pretty good too.
In ancient Greek myth it is the birthplace of Zeus, the father of all Greek gods. The story of Zeus is an interesting one. Crete is the setting for many of the Greek myths, most of them enacted in the elaborate and sumptuous palace of Knossos, where one firgure stands out as dominant, the figure of King Minos.

"Among their cities is the great city Cnosus, where Minos reigned when nine years old, he that held converse with great Zeus"

So sang Homer in the "Odyssey".

King Minos was of divine origin, sired by the king of the gods himself, Zeus.
